- The noun is one of expectation or will: For news or facts (소식, 사실, 소문) use -(느)ㄴ다는.
- With 각오/다짐 it is the subject's own resolve (반드시 이기리라는 각오); with 기대/예상/전망 it is a guess about anyone or anything.
- Written and formal. It often appears when an expectation is disappointed: ~(으)리라는 예상과 달리, ~(으)리라는 기대가 무너졌다.
Classic mistake
Wrong:
소식 is news of a fact, so it takes -(느)ㄴ다는/-았/었다는; -(으)리라는 goes with nouns of expectation such as 기대 or 믿음.
