TOPIK I · LEVEL 2
-네요
-네요 expresses your fresh reaction, often mild surprise, to something you have just seen, heard or experienced yourself.
문장 끝·말투Endings & speech styleHan: Before -네요, the final ㄹ of a stem drops, so 멀다 becomes 머네요.
Examples
The kimchi stew here is really good.
Oh, it's already ten o'clock. I should get going now.
Oh, it's raining outside. Do you have an umbrella?
Wow, you speak Korean really well.
Don’t mix up
-네요vs-아/어요-아/어요 simply states a fact, while -네요 adds that you have just noticed it: 비가 와요 (It's raining) vs 비가 오네요 (Oh, it's raining).
-네요vs-군요-군요 also marks realization but fits better when you realize something by being told or by reasoning, and sounds a bit more formal; -네요 is the everyday choice for what you perceive yourself: 아, 그래서 늦었군요.
How to build it
V/A+네요
N+(이)네요
past: V/A+았/었네요
- Use it for something you have just noticed directly; it sounds odd for facts you already knew well, such as your own name or job.
- Stems ending in ㄹ drop the ㄹ: 멀다 → 머네요, 살다 → 사네요, 만들다 → 만드네요.
- It is a statement ending: it cannot be used for commands or suggestions.
- For something that has already happened, add 았/었 before it: 눈이 많이 왔네요 (Oh, it snowed a lot).
Classic mistake
Wrong:
Before -네요, the final ㄹ of a stem drops, so 멀다 becomes 머네요.
