Examples
아침 일찍 일어나려고 알람을 두 개 맞췄어요.I set two alarms so I'd get up early.
한국 친구를 사귀려고 한국어를 배워요.I'm learning Korean to make Korean friends.
여행을 가려고 돈을 모으고 있어요.I'm saving money to go on a trip.
Don’t mix up
-(으)려고vs-(으)러-(으)러 must be followed by a movement verb but allows commands and suggestions: 밥 먹으러 갑시다; -(으)려고 works with any verb: 일찍 일어나려고 알람을 맞췄어요.
-(으)려고vs-기 위해(서)-기 위해(서) is more formal, suits bigger goals and allows commands: 건강을 지키기 위해서 운동합시다 vs 살을 빼려고 운동해요.-(으)려고vs-(으)려고 하다With 하다 the plan itself is the point of the sentence: 내일 떠나려고 해요; bare -(으)려고 links the aim to another action: 표를 사려고 줄을 섰어요.How to build it
V (vowel or ㄹ stem)+려고
V (consonant stem)+으려고
사다 → 사려고; 먹다 → 먹으려고; 만들다 → 만들려고; 듣다 → 들으려고
- Both clauses share the same subject, and the verb before -(으)려고 is an action verb, not an adjective.
- The main clause cannot be a command or suggestion: not 사려고 갑시다; use -(으)러 or -기 위해(서) there.
- Tense goes only on the main verb: 먹으려고 샀어요, not 먹었으려고.
- Any main verb is possible (모으다, 일어나다, 연습하다), unlike -(으)러, which needs a movement verb such as 가다/오다.
Classic mistake
Wrong: 책을 사려고 서점에 같이 갑시다.
Right: 책을 사러 서점에 같이 갑시다.
-(으)려고 cannot be followed by a suggestion or command; with 가다 use -(으)러.
