-는 한편

-는 한편 links two parallel actions or two sides of one situation: 'while doing X, (the subject) also does Y' or 'X is true; on the other hand, Y is true too'.

대조·양보Contrast & concession

Han: 바쁘다 is an adjective, so it takes -(으)ㄴ 한편, not 는 한편; 는 is for verbs and 있다/없다.

Examples

그는 낮에는 회사에 다니는 한편 밤에는 대학원에서 공부한다.He works at a company during the day while also studying at graduate school at night.
이번 결정에 찬성하는 사람이 많은 한편 반대하는 목소리도 적지 않다.Many people support this decision, while there are also quite a few opposing voices.

Don’t mix up

-는 한편vs-(으)면서-(으)면서 is everyday and fits two actions at the same moment; -는 한편 is formal and links two broader lines of activity or aspects: 음악을 들으면서 숙제를 해요.
-는 한편vs-는 반면(에)-는 반면에 stresses a clear opposition; -는 한편 can simply add a second, not necessarily opposite, side: 이 집은 넓은 반면에 좀 어둡다.

How to build it

V+는 한편
A+(으)ㄴ 한편
N+인 한편

늘리다 → 늘리는 한편, 바쁘다 → 바쁜 한편, 학생이다 → 학생인 한편

  1. Verbs (and 있다/없다) take 는 even for past events, because the final verb carries the tense; adjectives take -(으)ㄴ, and 이다 becomes 인.
  2. It is mainly used in writing, news and formal speech; for small everyday actions done at the same moment (eating while watching TV), use -(으)면서 instead.
  3. The two clauses should be of similar weight: two lines of effort or two aspects. The second clause often contains 도 or 또한; 한편으로는 is a common expanded form.

Classic mistake

Wrong: 그는 회사 일로 바쁘는 한편 봉사 활동도 꾸준히 한다.

Right: 그는 회사 일로 바쁜 한편 봉사 활동도 꾸준히 한다.

바쁘다 is an adjective, so it takes -(으)ㄴ 한편, not 는 한편; 는 is for verbs and 있다/없다.
