-(으)ㄹ 게 아니라
Use it to say that doing X is not the right move, so you should do Y instead: "rather than doing X, do Y."
대조·양보Contrast & concessionHan: The pattern leads to advice, a suggestion or an obligation, so it cannot end in a plain past statement; to report what you did, use -는 대신 instead.
Examples
화만 낼 게 아니라 아이가 왜 그랬는지 먼저 들어 봐야 해요.Rather than just getting angry, you should first hear why the child did it.
지금 포기할 게 아니라 조금 더 노력해 보자.Instead of giving up now, let's try a little harder.
혼자 고민할 게 아니라 선생님께 여쭤보세요.Rather than worrying about it alone, ask your teacher.
여기서 계속 기다릴 게 아니라 우리가 먼저 전화해 보자.Instead of just waiting here, let's call them first.
Don’t mix up
-(으)ㄹ 게 아니라vs-는 대신(에)-는 대신 is a neutral swap and can describe what simply happened; -(으)ㄹ 게 아니라 judges X as wrong and leads to advice. 영화를 보는 대신 책을 읽었어요.
-(으)ㄹ 게 아니라vs-지 말고-지 말고 is a direct "don't X, do Y"; -(으)ㄹ 게 아니라 frames X as an unwise choice, sounding more like reasoning. 울지 말고 말해 봐.
-(으)ㄹ 게 아니라vsN이/가 아니라N이/가 아니라 corrects a noun ("not A but B"); -(으)ㄹ 게 아니라 attaches to verbs and recommends a different action. 이건 커피가 아니라 차예요.
How to build it
V+(으)ㄹ 게 아니라
기다리다 → 기다릴 게 아니라, 찾다 → 찾을 게 아니라
- The second clause usually gives advice, a suggestion or an obligation (-(으)세요, -자, -아/어야 하다, -는 게 좋겠다). It is not used for plain past narration like -았/었어요.
- Do not put a tense marker before -(으)ㄹ: say 고민할 게 아니라, not 고민했을 게 아니라.
- It attaches to action verbs; both clauses normally have the same subject (usually the listener, or "we").
Classic mistake
Wrong: 계속 기다릴 게 아니라 먼저 연락했어요.
Right: 계속 기다릴 게 아니라 먼저 연락해 보세요.
The pattern leads to advice, a suggestion or an obligation, so it cannot end in a plain past statement; to report what you did, use -는 대신 instead.
