-(으)ㄹ 텐데 states what the speaker expects is probably true and uses that guess as background for advice, a contrast, or an unfinished feeling of worry or wish.
Guessing & judgingHan: Here the speaker is promising their own action, not guessing; a promise or intention used as a reason needs -(으)ㄹ 테니까, not -(으)ㄹ 텐데.
Examples
I wish it wouldn't rain tomorrow.
It's rush hour now, so the roads will probably be jammed — how about taking the subway?
You must be really tired, so get some rest early today.
If I had had time, I would have gone with you — it's a pity.
Don’t mix up
-(으)ㄹ 텐데vs-(으)ㄹ 테니까테니까 gives a reason and can express the speaker's own intention (제가 청소할 테니까 좀 쉬세요); 텐데 is only a guess used as background (힘들 텐데 좀 쉬세요).-(으)ㄹ 텐데vs-(으)ㄴ/는데-는데 presents a fact you know (밖이 추운데 코트 입으세요 — you've been outside); -(으)ㄹ 텐데 presents a guess (밖이 추울 텐데 코트 입으세요).
How to build it
V/A+(으)ㄹ 텐데
V/A+았/었을 텐데 (past)
- It marks a guess, not a known fact. If you can see or already know the situation, use -(으)ㄴ/는데 instead.
- For a guess about the past use -았/었을 텐데; after -았/었으면 it usually expresses regret about something that did not happen.
- It does not express the speaker's own intention or promise ("I will…"); for that use -(으)ㄹ 테니까.
- At the end of a sentence, -(으)ㄹ 텐데(요) leaves the thought hanging and sounds like worry or a wish; 좋을 텐데요 is very common.
Classic mistake
Wrong:
Here the speaker is promising their own action, not guessing; a promise or intention used as a reason needs -(으)ㄹ 테니까, not -(으)ㄹ 텐데.
