-자고 하다

Use -자고 하다 to report that someone suggested "let's do ~", that is, an action the speaker and the listener would do together.

인용·전달Quoting & reporting

Han: A negative suggestion is formed with -지 말다, so "let's not" becomes -지 말자고 하다; 안 cannot negate the propositive -자.

Examples

비가 많이 와서 남자 친구가 오늘은 나가지 말자고 했어요.It was raining hard, so my boyfriend suggested we not go out today.
동료가 회의를 다음 주로 미루자고 해서 일정을 바꿨어요.A coworker suggested we postpone the meeting to next week, so I changed the schedule.
친구가 주말에 같이 영화를 보자고 했어요.My friend suggested we watch a movie together on the weekend.
엄마가 오늘은 밖에서 저녁을 먹자고 하셨어요.Mom suggested we eat dinner out today.

Don’t mix up

-자고 하다vs-(으)라고 하다-(으)라고 하다 reports a command for the listener alone; -자고 하다 reports a suggestion that includes the speaker: 선생님이 숙제를 하라고 했어요 vs 친구가 같이 숙제를 하자고 했어요.
-자고 하다vs-(느)냐고 하다/묻다-(느)냐고 reports a question, not a proposal: 친구가 같이 갈 거냐고 물었어요 (asked if I'd go) vs 친구가 같이 가자고 했어요 (suggested we go).

How to build it

V+자고 하다 (negative: V + 지 말자고 하다)

가다 → 가자고 했어요; 가다 → 가지 말자고 했어요

  1. It attaches to action verbs. Adjectives and 이다 cannot take -자고 directly: 조용하자고 is wrong, so use the verb form 조용히 하자고 instead.
  2. For a negative suggestion use -지 말자고 하다, not 안 + V-자고.
  3. Tense and honorifics go on 하다, not on the verb before -자고: 가자고 했어요 / 가자고 하셨어요, not 갔자고.
  4. In casual speech -자고 해요 often shortens to -재요, and -자고 했어요 to -쟀어요.

Classic mistake

Wrong: 친구가 오늘은 술을 안 마시자고 했어요.

Right: 친구가 오늘은 술을 마시지 말자고 했어요.

A negative suggestion is formed with -지 말다, so "let's not" becomes -지 말자고 하다; 안 cannot negate the propositive -자.
