Marks a person or animal as the direction or destination of a movement: 'toward, to (someone)'. Mostly written or narrative; in speech

조사Particles

Han: 에게로 is only for people and animals; places take (으)로.

Examples

Everyone's eyes turned to him.
As soon as the child saw its mother, it ran to her.
The lost letter finally went back to its owner.

Don’t mix up

-에게로vs-에게에게 marks the receiver (주다, 전화하다); 에게로 marks the direction of movement: 친구에게 선물을 줬다 vs 친구에게로 달려갔다.
-에게로vs-(으)로(으)로 shows direction to a place; for a person you need 에게로: 학교로 갔다 vs 선생님에게로 갔다.

How to build it

  1. Used with verbs of motion or transfer:
  2. Only for people and animals; for places use
  3. Unlike 에게, it stresses direction, so it does not go with simple giving verbs: 친구에게 줬다, not 친구에게로 줬다.

Classic mistake

Wrong:

에게로 is only for people and animals; places take (으)로.
