-(느)ㄴ다거나

Lists actions or states as examples, 'things like doing A or B'; it comes from -다고 하거나 and gives representative options rather than a full list.

나열·첨가Listing & adding

Han: A present-tense verb takes -ㄴ/는다거나, and the list is normally closed with 하다.

Examples

시간이 날 때는 책을 읽는다거나 산책을 한다거나 해요.When I have time, I do things like reading or going for a walk.
회의에 늦는다거나 연락 없이 빠진다거나 하는 일은 없어야 합니다.Things like being late for meetings or missing them without notice must not happen.
머리가 아프다거나 열이 난다거나 하면 바로 쉬세요.If you get a headache or a fever, for example, rest right away.

Don’t mix up

-(느)ㄴ다거나vs-거나-거나 gives a plain choice; -ㄴ다거나 offers looser examples: 주말에는 영화를 보거나 쉬어요 vs 주말에는 영화를 본다거나 쉰다거나 하면서 보내요.
-(느)ㄴ다거나vs-(느)ㄴ다든지Nearly interchangeable: 운동을 한다든지 산책을 한다든지 하세요 = 운동을 한다거나 산책을 한다거나 하세요.

How to build it

V+ㄴ다거나/는다거나
A+다거나
N+(이)라거나 / past -았/었다거나

가다 → 간다거나; 먹다 → 먹는다거나; 만들다 → 만든다거나; 바쁘다 → 바쁘다거나; 학생 → 학생이라거나; 갔다 → 갔다거나

  1. It is usually repeated and closed with 하다: A-ㄴ다거나 B-ㄴ다거나 하다, or it modifies a noun: A-ㄴ다거나 하는 N ('things like A').
  2. Because it contains the quoting form -다고, it fits listing claims, excuses or typical behaviour: 바쁘다거나 아프다거나 하는 핑계.
  3. Verbs in the present need -ㄴ/는다거나 (먹는다거나), not the dictionary form (먹다거나).

Classic mistake

Wrong: 스트레스를 받을 때는 운동하다거나 잠을 자요.

Right: 스트레스를 받을 때는 운동을 한다거나 잠을 잔다거나 해요.
