V/A+(으)ㅁ에 따라 (consonant stem + 음, vowel stem + ㅁ, ㄹ-stem: ㄹ is kept and ㅁ is added under it)
증가하다 → 증가함에 따라, 줄어들다 → 줄어듦에 따라, 높아지다 → 높아짐에 따라
- It belongs to formal, written style (news, reports, essays). In everyday conversation Koreans usually say -(으)면서 instead.
- The first clause usually describes a change or process (증가하다, 발전하다, -아/어지다). A fixed, unchanging state sounds unnatural before it.
- With ㄹ-stems the ㄹ stays and ㅁ is added under it: 줄어들다 → 줄어듦, 만들다 → 만듦 (not 줄어들음).
- Tense is normally marked only in the final clause (발전함에 따라 … 달라졌다). -았/었음에 따라 appears mainly in official notices about a completed decision.
