-(으)라니(요)vs-(느)ㄴ다니-(느)ㄴ다니 reacts to news (a statement); -(으)라니 to an order: 회사를 그만둔다니! (You're quitting?!) vs 회사를 그만두라니! (You want me to quit?!)-(으)라니(요)vs-(으)라니까-(으)라니까 repeats your own order with insistence; -(으)라니 reacts to someone else's: 빨리 오라니까! (I told you to come!) vs 지금 당장 오라니! (Come right now?!)
How to build it
V+(으)라니(요)
주다 for the speaker → 달라니
negative: V+지 말라니
가다 → 가라니; 먹다 → 먹으라니; 만들다 → 만들라니; 돕다 → 도우라니; 빌려주다 → 빌려 달라니; 하지 말다 → 하지 말라니
- It is a shortening of the quoted command -(으)라고 하다니: after it comes the speaker's reaction (말이 돼?, 너무하다, 황당하다) or nothing but '!' or '?'.
- ㄹ-stems add 라니 without 으 (만들라니); ㅂ-irregulars change ㅂ to 우 (도우라니). With 주다 use 달라니 when the request is for the asker, 주라니 when it is for a third person.
- Echoing someone's words with -(으)라니요? is polite in form but a strong protest: 지금 그만두라니요?
- The same reaction works for other quoted speech: statements -(느)ㄴ다니, nouns -(이)라니 (see -(느)ㄴ다니), suggestions -자니, questions -(느)냐니: 이 밤에 산에 가자니!
Classic mistake
Wrong: 주말까지 이걸 다 만들으라니요?
Right: 주말까지 이걸 다 만들라니요?
Stems ending in ㄹ take 라니 directly, without 으: 만들라니, 살라니.
