Don’t mix up
-는 둥 마는 둥vs-는 듯 마는 듯듯 마는 듯 means something is so faint it is barely noticeable (rain, a smile), not that someone acts carelessly: 비가 오는 듯 마는 듯 해요.
-는 둥 마는 둥vs-다가 말다-다가 말다 means the action really stopped halfway; 둥 마는 둥 means it was done sloppily: 밥을 먹다가 말고 나갔어요.
-는 둥 마는 둥vs-다는 둥 -다는 둥-다는 둥 -다는 둥 lists things someone says (excuses, complaints), not how an action was done: 피곤하다는 둥 바쁘다는 둥 핑계를 댔어요.
How to build it
V+는 둥 마는 둥 (하다)
completed action: V+(으)ㄴ 둥 만 둥
먹다 → 먹는 둥 마는 둥 하다; 보다 → 본 둥 만 둥 하다
- Attach it to action verbs; with adjectives or 이다 it sounds unnatural.
- The second half is built with 말다 (마는 / 만), not with a repeated negated verb such as 안 먹는.
- It is usually followed by 하다 (하고, 하더니, 했다) or by the next action, e.g. 듣는 둥 마는 둥 하면서.
- It carries a critical or regretful tone, so it is not used in requests or commands (not 하는 둥 마는 둥 하세요).
Classic mistake
Wrong: 동생이 청소를 하는 둥 안 하는 둥 했어요.
Right: 동생이 청소를 하는 둥 마는 둥 했어요.
The fixed pattern uses 말다 for the second half (마는), not a negated form of the same verb.
