Don’t mix up
-다손 치더라도vs-더라도-더라도 is a neutral 'even if' for any situation; -다손 치더라도 adds 'let's grant that claim' and sounds heavy, so it doesn't suit simple plans: 비가 오더라도 갈게요 is natural, but 비가 온다손 치더라도 갈게요 is not.-다손 치더라도vs-다고 해도The meaning is almost the same, but -다고 해도 is neutral and common in speech, while -다손 치더라도 is bookish: 바쁘다고 해도 연락은 해야지.
-다손 치더라도vs-(으)ㄴ들-(으)ㄴ들 stresses that an action would be pointless and usually ends in a rhetorical question; -다손 치더라도 simply concedes a premise: 지금 후회한들 무슨 소용이 있겠어요?How to build it
V+ㄴ/는다손 치더라도
A+다손 치더라도
N+(이)다손 치더라도
past: V/A/N+았/었다손 치더라도
가다 → 간다손 치더라도, 먹다 → 먹는다손 치더라도, 비싸다 → 비싸다손 치더라도, 학생 → 학생이다손 치더라도, 하다 → 했다손 치더라도
- Conjugate the part before 손 like quoted speech: verbs take -ㄴ/는다, adjectives -다, nouns -(이)다. Past tense goes before 다손 (-았/었다손, 이었다손), while 치더라도 itself stays unchanged.
- The second clause usually states a judgment that still stands: criticism, an obligation, or 'it still won't happen' (-아야 한다, -ㄹ 수는 없다, -지는 않을 것이다). It sounds odd with simple everyday plans or promises.
- It is formal and argumentative, typical of essays, editorials and debates, and often pairs with 설령, 아무리 or 비록. In casual conversation -다고 해도 sounds more natural.
