-(으)려도vs-(으)려야 -(으)ㄹ 수가 없다-(으)려야 is a fixed, stronger frame almost always followed by the same verb + 수 없다: 잊으려야 잊을 수가 없다. -(으)려도 is freer: 잊으려도 자꾸 생각난다.-(으)려도vs-아/어도-아/어도 concedes an action that actually happens: 많이 먹어도 배가 고프다. -(으)려도 concedes only the intention: 먹으려도 입맛이 없다.How to build it
V+(으)려도 (consonant stem + 으려도; vowel or ㄹ stem + 려도)
가다 → 가려도; 잊다 → 잊으려도; 만들다 → 만들려도; 듣다 → 들으려도; 돕다 → 도우려도
- Action verbs only, because it expresses intention. Tense goes only at the end of the sentence: 자려도 잘 수가 없었다, not *잤으려도.
- The second clause is typically negative: 안/못, -(으)ㄹ 수 없다, 어렵다, 쉽지 않다; often the same verb is repeated: 잊으려도 잊을 수가 없다.
- It can also state what even a simple attempt requires: 물건 하나를 사려도 회원 카드가 있어야 한다 'even to buy one item you need a membership card'.
- Write -(으)려도; -(으)ㄹ려도 and -(으)ㄹ래도 are common in speech but nonstandard.
Classic mistake
Wrong: 잠을 잤으려도 밖이 시끄러워서 잘 수가 없었다.
Right: 잠을 자려도 밖이 시끄러워서 잘 수가 없었다.
No 았/었 before -(으)려도; the past is shown only in the final verb (없었다).
