-에 힘입어vsN 덕분에 / V-은 덕분에덕분에 is everyday and works with people and verbs; 에 힘입어 is formal and takes only abstract nouns: 친구 덕분에 길을 찾았어요.
-에 힘입어vsN(으)로 인해(으)로 인해 is a neutral cause and fits negative results too; 에 힘입어 needs a helpful force and a good result: 폭우로 인해 도로가 통제되었다.
How to build it
N+에 힘입어 (before a noun: N + 에 힘입은 + N)
성원 → 성원에 힘입어
- Attaches to nouns only, usually abstract supports or trends (성원, 응원, 인기, 호조, 지원). A bare person noun sounds odd; say 선생님의 격려에 힘입어, not 선생님에 힘입어.
- The result is positive or desired. For a negative cause or outcome, use (으)로 인해 or 때문에.
- It is formal: news, reports, speeches and official thanks. In everyday conversation 덕분에 is more natural.
- The main clause usually reports an achievement or change (성장했다, 늘었다, 돌파했다) or a resolution (노력하겠습니다); it is rarely followed by a command or suggestion.
Classic mistake
