Examples

길이 너무 막혀서 약속에 늦을 수밖에 없었어요.Traffic was so bad that I couldn't help being late.
다른 방법이 없어서 회의를 다음 주로 미룰 수밖에 없습니다.There is no other way, so we have no choice but to postpone the meeting to next week.
매일 연습하니까 실력이 늘 수밖에 없지요.You practise every day, so of course your skills improve.

Don’t mix up

-(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다vs-는 수밖에 없다-는 수밖에 없다 names only the one remaining action (verbs only); -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 also covers inevitable results with adjectives: 기다리는 수밖에 없어요 vs 비쌀 수밖에 없어요.
-(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다vs-아/어야 하다-아/어야 하다 states a duty; -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 stresses that there is no alternative: 일찍 가야 해요 vs 버스가 없어서 걸어갈 수밖에 없었어요.

How to build it

V/A+(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 (past: (으)ㄹ 수밖에 없었다)

가다 → 갈 수밖에 없다; 먹다 → 먹을 수밖에 없다; 비싸다 → 비쌀 수밖에 없다; 듣다 → 들을 수밖에 없다; 늘다 → 늘 수밖에 없다

  1. With verbs it means a forced choice; with adjectives (and verbs of change) a natural, expected result: 택시를 탈 수밖에 없었어요 / 재료가 좋으니 맛있을 수밖에 없어요.
  2. The reason usually comes first, with -아서/어서, -(으)니까 or -기 때문에.
  3. For a past situation put the past tense on 없다 only: 포기할 수밖에 없었다.

Classic mistake

Wrong: 버스가 끊겨서 택시를 탔을 수밖에 없었어요.

Right: 버스가 끊겨서 택시를 탈 수밖에 없었어요.

For a past forced action the past tense goes only on 없다, not before 수밖에.
