Examples

Don’t mix up
-는 수밖에 없다vs-(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다-(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 can also mean a result is inevitable and works with adjectives; -는 수밖에 없다 only names the one remaining action: 재료가 좋으니 비쌀 수밖에 없어요 vs 돈이 없으니 기다리는 수밖에 없어요.-는 수밖에 없다vs-아/어야 하다-아/어야 하다 states a duty or requirement; -는 수밖에 없다 adds that other options were tried or don't exist: 내일까지 서류를 내야 해요 vs 다른 방법이 없으니 기다리는 수밖에 없어요.
How to build it
V (action verb)+는 수밖에 없다
기다리다 → 기다리는 수밖에 없다
- Used with action verbs. For adjectives or for a natural, unavoidable result, use -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 instead (비쌀 수밖에 없다).
- The verb stays in the 는 form; tense goes on 없다: 미루는 수밖에 없었다 (not 미뤘는 수밖에).
- It expresses a choice of action made after other options are exhausted, so it often comes with 이제, 그냥, 결국 and the subject is usually the speaker or people the speaker is talking about deciding.
Classic mistake
Wrong: 이 식당은 재료가 좋아서 비싼 수밖에 없어요.
Right: 이 식당은 재료가 좋아서 비쌀 수밖에 없어요.
비싸다 is an adjective describing an unavoidable result, not an action someone chooses, so it needs -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다, not -는/-(으)ㄴ 수밖에 없다.
