-(으)ㄴ/는 관계로 gives an objective circumstance as the reason for something in a formal, official tone, like English “due to the fact that…”.

Han: -는 관계로 is an official, written-style connective; in casual speech with a friend about a personal reason it sounds absurdly formal, so the everyday -아서/어서 is used.

How to build it

V+는 관계로 (present)
V+(으)ㄴ 관계로 (past)
A+(으)ㄴ 관계로
N+인 관계로

진행하다 → 진행하는 관계로, 변경되다 → 변경된 관계로, 많다 → 많은 관계로, 출장 중 → 출장 중인 관계로

  1. It belongs to formal and written Korean: notices, announcements, official emails, news. In casual conversation it sounds stiff, so use -아서/어서 or -기 때문에 there.
  2. Choose the modifier by word class and time: action verbs take 는 for the present and (으)ㄴ for the past; adjectives take (으)ㄴ; nouns need 인 (공사 중인 관계로, not 공사 중 관계로).
  3. It usually explains an unavoidable situation behind a change, delay or inconvenience, and is often followed by an apology or a polite request (-아/어 주시기 바랍니다). It is rarely used for personal feelings.

Classic mistake

Wrong: (친구에게) 어제 너무 피곤한 관계로 일찍 잤어.

Right: (친구에게) 어제 너무 피곤해서 일찍 잤어.
