-(으)ㄴ/는 가운데

Sets up a background situation that is going on while the main event happens ('amid…', 'while … is going on'), typical of news and formal speech.

시간·순서Time & sequence

Han: 춥다 is an adjective, so it takes -(으)ㄴ 가운데, and past tense is not added before 가운데; the final verb 열렸다 already shows the past.

Examples

많은 비가 내리는 가운데 경기가 진행되었습니다.The match went ahead amid heavy rain.
물가가 계속 오르는 가운데 시민들의 걱정도 커지고 있다.As prices keep rising, citizens are growing more worried.
바쁘신 가운데 참석해 주셔서 진심으로 감사드립니다.Thank you sincerely for attending despite your busy schedule.
가족과 친구들이 지켜보는 가운데 두 사람은 결혼식을 올렸다.The couple held their wedding as family and friends looked on.

Don’t mix up

-(으)ㄴ/는 가운데vs-는 동안-는 동안 simply marks a span of time and is fine in everyday speech; -는 가운데 is formal and stresses the surrounding situation: 제가 요리하는 동안 TV 보세요 (not 요리하는 가운데).
-(으)ㄴ/는 가운데vs-는 중에-는 중에 means 'in the middle of doing' an activity, often when something interrupts it; -는 가운데 is a wider backdrop: 샤워하는 중에 전화가 왔어요.
-(으)ㄴ/는 가운데vsN 가운데After a noun, 가운데 means 'among / out of', not 'amid a situation': 지원자들 가운데 세 명이 합격했다.

How to build it

V+는 가운데 (ongoing action)
V+(으)ㄴ 가운데 (completed state)
A+(으)ㄴ 가운데

내리다 → 비가 내리는 가운데; 모이다 → 사람들이 모인 가운데; 바쁘다 → 바쁘신 가운데

  1. It is formal: mostly used in writing, news, speeches and announcements. In casual conversation Koreans usually say -는 동안 or -는데 instead.
  2. Adjectives take -(으)ㄴ 가운데 (추운 가운데, 바쁘신 가운데); verbs take -는 for an ongoing action and -(으)ㄴ for a resulting state (모인 가운데).
  3. Do not put past tense -았/었- before 가운데; past time is shown only on the final verb: 비가 오는 가운데 경기가 열렸다.
  4. The first clause should be a situation that lasts for a while (weather, a trend, people watching), not a one-moment action like 문을 열다.

Classic mistake

Wrong: 날씨가 추웠는 가운데 행사가 열렸다.

Right: 날씨가 추운 가운데 행사가 열렸다.

춥다 is an adjective, so it takes -(으)ㄴ 가운데, and past tense is not added before 가운데; the final verb 열렸다 already shows the past.
