V+(으)ㄴ 탓에 (past)
V+는 탓에 (present) · A+(으)ㄴ 탓에 · N+인 탓에 (or N + 탓에)
늦게 일어나다 → 늦게 일어난 탓에 / 바쁘다 → 바쁜 탓에
- The result is usually negative or unwanted. For a good result, use -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에 instead.
- The second clause cannot be a command or suggestion (-(으)세요, -(으)ㅂ시다, -자); it states a fact or result.
- With verbs, use -(으)ㄴ for a past cause (잔 탓에) and -는 for a present or ongoing cause (막히는 탓에). Do not use -았/었는 (잤는 탓에 is wrong).
- With adjectives, use -(으)ㄴ: 더운 탓에, 바쁜 탓에. With nouns, use 인 탓에 or just 탓에: 제 실수 탓에.
Classic mistake
Wrong: 선생님이 잘 가르쳐 주신 탓에 시험에 합격했어요.
Right: 선생님이 잘 가르쳐 주신 덕분에 시험에 합격했어요.
