Don’t mix up
-(으)ㄹ 따름이다vs-(으)ㄹ 뿐이다The meaning is the same; the choice depends on register. 뿐이다 is neutral and fine in everyday talk, while 따름이다 sounds formal. Compare 그냥 물어봤을 뿐이에요 (casual) with 그저 감사할 따름입니다 (speech).-(으)ㄹ 따름이다vs-(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다수밖에 없다 means 'have no choice but to' and expresses necessity, while 따름이다 only means 'merely, nothing more'. Example: 비가 와서 집에 있을 수밖에 없었어요.How to build it
V/A+-(으)ㄹ 따름이다
V/A+-았/었을 따름이다 (past)
N+일 따름이다
감사하다 → 감사할 따름입니다; 하다 → 했을 따름입니다
- It is formal and bookish. It is typical of speeches, interviews and writing, and it sounds stiff among friends. In casual talk use -(으)ㄹ 뿐이다 or 그냥 instead.
- For a past action, put the tense before 따름: 했을 따름이다 ('I merely did'). 했던 따름이다 and 한 따름이다 are wrong.
- It does not express necessity or 'having no other choice'. It does not mean 'can only' in the sense of ability either. It only limits the statement to 'just this'.
- It closes a statement and cannot be made into a command or suggestion. It very often follows adjectives of the speaker's feelings, such as 감사하다, 죄송하다, 놀랍다 and 안타깝다, usually with 그저.
