TOPIK II · LEVEL 4
-까지 (첨가)
Means 'even, on top of that': it adds an extreme or unexpected item to what has already happened, in both bad and good situations.
나열·첨가Listing & addingHan: 까지 takes the place of the subject particle 이/가; the two are not stacked.
Examples
길이 막히는데 비까지 오기 시작했어요.The roads were jammed, and on top of that it started to rain.
가족은 물론이고 오랜 친구들까지 그의 결정에 반대했다.Not only his family but even his old friends opposed his decision.
할머니께서 밥을 차려 주시고 용돈까지 주셨어요.My grandmother made me a meal and even gave me pocket money.
Don’t mix up
-까지 (첨가)vs-마저마저 stresses losing even the last remaining thing and sounds resigned; 까지 simply adds one more: 너마저 나를 떠나니? vs 비까지 오네.-까지 (첨가)vs-조차조차 points to the most basic thing that failed, usually with a negative; 까지 goes beyond what was expected: 물조차 못 마셨어요 vs 디저트까지 먹었어요.How to build it
N+까지 (also after other particles: N에게까지, N에서까지)
비 → 비까지; 용돈 → 용돈까지; 동생 → 동생에게까지
- 까지 replaces 이/가 and 을/를 (비까지 와요, not 비가까지), but it can follow other particles: 친구에게까지, 집에서까지.
- Unlike 조차 and 마저, which lean negative, 까지 works for good news too: 선물까지 주셨어요 (they even gave me a present).
- It often comes with words that pile things up: 게다가, -(으)ㄴ/는 데다가, N은/는 물론이고 … N까지.
- Do not confuse it with the range 까지 ('until/up to'): here there is no end point, only an added item, and 도 can follow for emphasis (너까지도).
Classic mistake
Wrong: 길도 막히는데 비가까지 와요.
Right: 길도 막히는데 비까지 와요.
까지 takes the place of the subject particle 이/가; the two are not stacked.
